Posted June 1, 2011 00:24:00

A man is fighting for his life after being shot in the hip in Melbourne's west on Wednesday night

The man, aged in his mid-20s, was found lying in the street in Nicholson Street at Footscray shortly after 9:00pm (AEST).

Paramedic Andy McKenzie said the man "had lost a massive amount lot of blood".

"There was uncontrolled bleeding from the gun wound," he said.

The man was unconscious and paramedics carried out CPR as they rushed him to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"We put a drip in him and gave him some fluid and continued with the CPR," Mr McKenzie said.

"We were doing all this in a moving vehicle because our main concern was to just get him to a hospital in the shortest amount of time."
