Joeys get tough World Cup draw

Posted May 18, 2011 14:48:00

Australia's young footballers have been drawn into a tough group featuring powerhouse Brazil for next month's FIFA under 17s World Cup in Mexico.

The Joeys will also face Ivory Coast and Denmark in Group F at the tournament, to be held from June 18 to July 10.

Joeys coach Jan Versleijen acknowledges progressing from the group stage will be challenging but is confident his side will be competitive.

"The advantage that we have going into the tournament is that the majority of our squad is based at the Australian Institute of Sport and the players are very familiar with each other," he said.

"Again our goal will be to progress from the group phase into the knock-out phase and then beyond."

Australia faces Ivory Coast on June 20, Brazil on June 23 and Demark on June 26.
