The Prime Minister is today switching on mainland Australia's first National Broadband Network service.

Julia Gillard is in Armidale which is one of the five "first release" test sites.

Coffs Harbour interests are closely watching today's event as the city has been selected for an early roll-out of the NBN.

However NBN Co spokesman Steve Christian says the start date for the rollout remains hazy.

"Unfortunately I can't give you a definitive timeframe but here's what I can tell you is, we're working very closely to complete the Telstra agreement.

"It gives us access to a lot of the local utilities, conduits and poles.

"When we complete that then we'll be in a much better position to really talk about when the rollout will start and therefore when it will complete and when customers will be connected," he said.
