Victoria Police have increased the reward for information about an 11-year-old gangland killing to $1 million.

Richard Mladenich was shot dead in a hotel room in Acland Street at St Kilda in May 2000.

Police have described Mladenich as a close associate of Carl Williams, the underworld killer who was bashed to death in prison last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles from the Homicide Squad says police are close to solving the Mladenich murder after a review of the case, but need help with finding some vital pieces of information.

"Richard was an associate of Carl Williams and Carl Williams had a philosophy - those who know, don't talk, and those that talk, don't know," he said.

"But I think at the end of Purana, we proved that wrong.

"That those who know, do talk. And that's where I'm really targeting today. I know who you are and I'll be waiting for your call."
