Trees fall on NSW passenger trains

Updated July 5, 2011 23:09:00

Trees have fallen onto two passenger trains in separate incidents in the New South Wales Blue Mountains.

A westbound CityRail train was almost at Medlow Bath station at 8.00pm (AEST) on Tuesday when a tree fell on the first carriage, police said.

One man suffered minor cuts in the incident and was taken to Katoomba Hospital for treatment.

The other passengers were removed from the train and carried on their journey by bus.

The train sustained major damage, with the tree remaining on top of the carriage.

Half-an-hour earlier a tree fell onto an eastbound Country Link train travelling between Blackheath and Medlow Bath.

No-one was injured in that incident.

Alternative transport is being arranged for the passengers of the CountryLink train.

CityRail has suspended trains in both directions on the Blue Mountains line between Lawson and Lithgow, with repair crews on site assessing the damage to overhead wiring.

A limited bus service is in place and there is no indication of when the line will be reopened.

Strong winds have caused havoc throughout the Blue Mountains.

Thousands of homes remain without power as gale force winds bring down trees and powerlines in the area.

The worst affected areas are the Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Illawarra and South Coast where 33,000 customers are without power.

The conditions are making it difficult for crews to restore power, with wind gusts of up 137 kilometres per hour felt in some areas.
