UFC 111 is this weekend, and there are a few fights I wanted to touch on. The first of which is the match up between John Fitch and Ben Saunders.
This fight was originally suppose to feature a rematch between Fitch and Thiago Alves, however Alves had to withdrawn from the fight when he couldn't get medical clearance to fight. Apparently, two MRI's and one cat scan identified an irregularity with his brain.
So with Alves out, Ben Saunders stepped in and suddenly finds himself with an opportunity. Think of it this way, he gets to fight on the best main card of the year, he will fight a top 3 contender in the welterweight division, and with a victory he would propel himself into serious title contention.
Although it sounds good, the down side is that Saunders has to face one tough dude. John Fitch is 11-1 in the UFC, with the lone loss coming against George St-Pierre. Stylistically, Saunders does well against fighters that will stand with him, that is one thing Fitch will not do.
The other factor here is how late Saunders took the fight, which could help or hurt him. I think Fitch wins this fight 90% of the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if Saunders wins the fight.
