Duo kayak from Darwin to East Timor

Two Adelaide men have reportedly become the first ever to successfully sea kayak from Darwin to East Timor.

Dave Williamson and Ben Woodcock spent eight days on the water including a stopover on the Tiwi Islands.

Mr Williamson says the biggest challenge was combating the strong current in the Timor Sea.

"A couple of times on this trip the environment and the weather made it very difficult and you were certainly weighing up your options about how you may get out of there if you needed to get out of there," he said.

He says the last part of the journey required strong motivation and both men to row for 24 hours straight to get to shore.

"One thing about the ocean is there is no out - you can't say 'I've had enough I'm getting off' because there is no off," he said.

"You have to keep going and that's where it's really important to make sure you have well organised instruction management plans before you leave.

"It's not something you just go 'lets go do this' - it takes a lot of planning a lot of preparation and a lot of skill."
