Gloves off at Republican Iowa debate

Texas Governor Rick PerryMr Perry's announcement Saturday is expected to shake up the tepid Republican field

Texas Governor Rick Perry will join the race to become Republican presidential nominee in 2012, US media say.

Mr Perry is expected to announce his candidacy in Iowa on Saturday, reports said. A spokesman said Mr Perry would make his intentions "very clear".

The news came as eight Republican rivals were preparing to hold the third debate of the 2012 race in the early primary state of Iowa on Thursday.

Mitt Romney hopes to cement his front-runner status in the Ames debate.

Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman and others will vie to become his chief challenger, analysts say.

The candidates hope to win the Republican nomination to face President Barack Obama in the November 2012 general election.

Mr Perry, the hard-right conservative firebrand governor of Texas, is expected to make a formal announcement on Saturday, the day most of his rivals take part in the Iowa straw poll in Ames.

Analysts are describing the move as an effort to upstage his rivals taking part in the poll.

The Republican field has been slow to take shape this year, although the first balloting will not be held until February in Iowa.

Analysts say the tepid interest in the present Republican field shows the race is is ripe for Mr Perry's candidacy, although some Republicans have doubts about whether his combative style will win over independent voters key to winning the general election.

Thursday's debate is to begin at 21:00 local time (01:00 GMT)
