UFC 112 Invincible: Anderson Silva vs Demian Maia
UFC 112 will culminate with a fight between Anderson Silva and Demian Maia. This is a fight I thought should have happened back before Maia's loss to Nate Marquardt, but I think it actually makes more sense now.
The lessons Maia learned in the Marquardt fight will clearly help him. According to the UFC countdown show, Maia went from training muay thai one day a week to five days a week. I don't think this means he stands with Anderson Silva, but at least his reactions will be automatic instead of calculated.
Clearly Maia has to get this fight to the ground. The complicated part is that he has to be careful enough not to get knocked out without looking as though he is avoiding contact. We all remember what happened in the Thales Leites fight.
I would love to see this fight reach the ground, but I just can't picture how Maia gets this done. I think Anderson Silva wins this by knockout in the second round.
UFC 109 Shaping up Nicely
After looking at the UFC 109 card again, I believe this will be a quality event. Not only does the card include name brand fighters like Couture, Coleman, Marquardt, Swick, Maia, Serra and Trigg but also some quality match ups. The headline fight features two UFC hall-of-famers. At first, I thought this fight didn't make sense but now it does for two reasons. First, after a little research, this match should have happened years ago when the fighters were both first making a name for themselves. Second, this is a fan-favorite match up that people want to see.
So what else does this card have to offer? I am probably most excited to see how some fighters react to recent losses...
- Mike Swicks loss to Dan Hardy
- Demian Maia loss to Nate Marquardt
- Matt Serra - Matt Hughes
- Frank Trigg loss to Josh Koscheck
Only time will tell, but I putting my money on this turning out to be a memorable event.
Sun storms 'could get stronger'
Solar storms may be more powerful at times of middling solar activity
Within decades, solar storms are likely to become more disruptive to planes and spacecraft, say researchers at Reading University.
The work, published in Geophysical Research Letters, predicts that once the Sun shifts towards an era of lower solar activity, more hazardous radiation will reach Earth.
The team says the Sun is currently at a grand solar maximum.
This phase began in the 1920s - and has lasted throughout the space age.
Mike Lockwood, professor of space environment physics at Reading, said: "All the evidence suggests that the Sun will shortly exit from a grand solar maximim that has persisted since before the start of the space age.
"In a grand solar maximum, the peaks of the 11-year sunspot cycle are larger and the average number of solar flares and associated events such as coronal mass ejections are greater.
"On the other hand in a grand solar minimum there are almost no sunpsots for several decades. The last time this happened was during the Maunder Minimum, between about 1650 and 1700."
The research indicates that most radiation hits the Earth during periods of middling solar activity. Increased radiation is a particular problem for aviation and communications - technology that did not exist the last time the sun cycle ended its grand maximum.
Ice core dataThe research is based on evidence from ice cores and tree trunks going back 10,000 years. The team measured levels of nitrates and cosmogenic isotopes which enter our atmosphere and are deposited in ice and organic material.
Professor Lockwood told BBC News: "You can tell by the concentration of nitrates in ice sheets that there has been a solar event. What we showed was that they all cropped up at more middling activity than we have been used to.
"We used this data to say that an unfortunate combination of solar conditions is coming our way in the next few decades.
"It's just a question of how much worse the radiation gets and how long it lasts."
The most disruptive radiation is from solar energetic particles, which are carried away from the Sun by coronal mass ejections, or solar storms, which explode from the Sun's surface.
The evidence seems to indicate that although there are fewer solar storms once the Sun leaves its grand maximum, they are more powerful, faster and therefore carry more particles.
A decline in solar activity also allows more radiation from other parts of the galaxy to enter the Solar System.
In a separate study, a team at Stanford University in California, say they have a developed a technique that could give advance warning of the formation of sunspots before they become visible on the Sun's surface. Sunspots are areas of high magnetic activity. They are significant because these are the areas where solar storms or coronal mass ejections erupt.
Stathis Ilondis and colleagues, writing in the Journal Science, say their findings will help give advance warning of solar storms and the resulting radiation which disrupt communications and transport on Earth.
The Stanford researchers used a technique called helioseismology
The Stanford team used a novel technique called helioseismology, which is based on analysis of vibrations on the solar surface. The team discovered that these acoustic signals causing the vibrations moved faster in regions where sunspots were forming up to 65,000km (40,000m) deep.
The resulting sunspots appeared on the surface between one and two days after the differences in vibrations were detected.
Mr Ilondis told BBC News: "It's an early warning for emerging sunspots. This is our main finding."
"We can also predict the size and strength of the sunspot. And if it is a large sunspot then it is more probable to produce some big space weather events like some strong flares."

Fedor Emelianenko Takes On Fabricio Werdum in a Joint Strikeforce/M1 Spectacular
The Strikeforce event on June 26th is bound to be one for the books as Strikeforce mixed martial arts joins up with M-1 Global to bring some of the toughest fighters in the world together within one caged ring. This is an extra special event because it combines Strikeforce MMA with M-1 Global, which allows it to be a complete world showcase of some of the world's best fighters. This showcase has a huge title card as Fedor Emelianenko (who is actually a co-owner of M-1 Global) takes on Fabricio Werdum in a heavyweight bout that promises to entertain.
Fedor Emelianenko- also known as "The Last Emperor"- holds a record of 31-1. His only recorded loss comes from the fact that his fight with Tsuyoshi Kohsaka was stopped when Emelianenko suffered a gash in the opening seconds of the fight. Even though he has a loss to tarnish his undefeated streak, "The Last Emperor" understands that numbers don't mean anything when you're inside the cage.
"Fedor" has been at the top as the best heavyweight in the world for the better part of the last decade. He has taken down Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovi?, Mark Coleman, and Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira on his way there. On June 26th, he goes up against Fabricio Werdum (the number 9 heavyweight in the world) for a showdown that's bound to define the two fighters and the event.
Even though Emelianenko is the top heavyweight in the world he will have a lot on his hands going up against the jiu-jitsu technician, Fabricio Werdum. Werdum is known as "Vai Cavalo" or "Leading Horse" which speaks to his wild and free nature in the ring. It looks like it will be Emelianenko's job to tame Werdum if he wants victory.
However, the June 26th Strikeforce will not just be the main event. In fact, many more people are looking forward to the top woman in the world, Cris "Cyborg" Santos taking on Jan Finney. Most feel that Cyborg will take out Finney pretty easily and glide on to an effortless victory (even more so considering that Finney's nickname is "Cuddles"), but Finney has been known to be scrappy making the fight a good one to watch.
Plus, seeing Cris Cyborg in action is always an event in itself.
With both the male and female champions defending their titles on the same night, the June 26th Strikeforce event is destined to be an exciting evening for MMA fans.

Man executed amid death-drug row
If he is executed as expected, Jackson will be the 31st prisoner put to death in the US this year
The US state of Virginia is set to execute a convicted murderer and rapist with a lethal injection, despite objections from the drug manufacturer.
Jerry Jackson is scheduled to die on Thursday night for the murder of 88-year-old Ruth Phillips.
A shortage of drugs used in past US executions has forced Virginia authorities to rely on an epilepsy drug manufactured by Danish firm Lundbeck.
Lundbeck has said it opposes the "distressing misuse" of its product.
The drugs that are to be used to execute Jackson were obtained before Lundbeck imposed strict controls on the distribution of pentobarbital, a drug used to treat severe epilepsy.
The company has strongly objected to its product's use in capital punishment, but declined to halt production, citing medical need for it.
Difficulty obtaining drugsJackson was convicted and condemned to death in 2002 on two counts of capital murder, rape and other charges relating to the death of Ms Phillips.
Prosecutors said he climbed in her bathroom window during an attempted burglary, then sexually assaulted her and killed her after she awoke and confronted him.
The execution is planned for 21:00 local time (01:00 GMT) at Greensville Correction Center
His execution, scheduled for Thursday night, comes amid a global effort by drug manufacturers to prevent their products from being used in US executions - whether for moral, regulatory or public relations concerns.
Amid the difficulty obtaining execution drugs, US states have had to experiment with different ways to kill prisoners without violating the US constitution's bar on "cruel and unusual punishments", analysts say.
Virginia, like many of the 34 out of 50 US states which allows capital punishment, uses a "cocktail" of three drugs to execute condemned prisoners.
If all goes according to plan, the first drug renders the prisoner unconscious, a second paralyses the prisoner (thus masking signs the first drug worked or did not work) and third drug stops the heart.
"A lot hinges on the first drug," Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, a research organisation, told the BBC.
"It causes unconsciousness, and if that doesn't work well, the next drugs are very painful."
Epilepsy fightFor years, the states used a drug called sodium thiopental in the first stage, but in 2010 the drug's only US manufacturer, Hospira, announced it was ceasing production.
Some US states turned to Dream Pharma, a British firm operating in Acton, West London, for sodium thiopental, until a ban on exports imposed in December 2010.
Amid trouble obtaining sodium thiopental, the states this year have turned to pentobarbital.
So far in 2011, US states have executed 23 prisoners using that drug, prompting strong condemnation from Lundbeck.
While the drug, sold under the brand name Nembutal, comprises less than 1% of the company's sales, Lundbeck said it declined to cease production because doctors it had surveyed said they would have trouble treating severe epilepsy without it.
But the company last month announced restrictions on the drug's distribution in an effort to keep it from being shipped to prisons in US states that practice capital punishment.
Under that programme, Lundbeck will review orders for pentobarbital and deny them to prisons in capital punishment states.
Purchasers will have to sign a form affirming the drug is for their own use and will not be used for capital punishment and that they will not re-distribute the drug without the company's approval.
"While the company has never sold the product directly to prisons and therefore can't make guarantees, we are confident that our new distribution program will play a substantial role in restricting prisons' access to Nembutal for misuse as part of lethal injection," chief executive Ulf Wiinberg said.
Unless the US Supreme Court intervenes, Jackson will be executed on Thursday night at the Greensville Correction Center in Jarratt, Virginia, using the three-drug cocktail with pentobarbital.

First Grader Develops iPhone App
With all this talk of a tech bubble and the recent success of the Facebook movie, creating your own startup is the hot new trend and fresh on the bandwagon is a 7-year-old who may very well be the world?s youngest iPhone app developer.
And this isn?t some gimmick. 7-year-old Connor Zamary is a legitimate entrepreneur, his father, Craig Zamary enthused to CNET in an e-mail interview. ?He pitched investors, made his own PowerPoint, filled out the paperwork for his LLC all by himself, has done conference calls with the West Coast developers," Zamary said.
Zamary?s first app is a game called Toaster Pop, a family-friendly iPhone app that allows users to slather toast with various condiments such as butter, jam, and a special spread called ?The Works.? The game costs 99-cents and is available on the Apple App Store.
The most challenging part of being a preteen CEO? Pitching to investors, Connor told CNET. ?I was nervous,? he admits.
Undaunted, Connor is already thinking about version 2.0 -- though he may already be transitioning from creator to venture capitalist.
According to Connor, his 6-year-old sister Annabelle already has an idea in the works and big brother could be investor number one ? if she ever gets her pitch together that is.

Israel pounds Gaza after attacks
The Israeli military has confirmed carrying out airstrikes over the Gaza Strip following a deadly series of attacks in southern Israel.
At least five people were killed in the airstrikes, Palestinian sources said.
Earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said Israel would respond with "full force and determination" after attacks on vehicles near Eilat.
Israeli officials said Gazan militants were responsible, though Gaza's Hamas government denied involvement.

Why move the WEC lightweights the UFC?
Today, Dana White confirmed that eventually the WEC lightweight division will merge with the UFC''s lightweight division. You might remember that not too long ago I suggested that it didn't make sense to have both the WEC and the UFC. Well, this is would be one more reason to get rid of the WEC.
I understand that the WEC plans to add one or two lighter weight divisions, but I keep asking myself why add them to the WEC and not to the UFC? If you are going to keep the WEC around, why not have a lightweight division? There are plenty of fighters to fill the roster and it is an exiting division to watch. Someone please explain this to me.
UFC 2011 Fighter Cuts

- Brandon Vera - January 6th
- Antonio McKee - January 6th
- Marcus Davis - January 6th

UFC Live Vera vs Jones Card Results
The fist ever UFC even on VERSUS turned out to be an OK event. I thought the card had intriguing matchups, but failed to deliver any great fights. Here is my take on the main card.
- Jon Jones defeats Brandon Vera via TKO -Going into this one, I didn't know what to expect from Vera. I am actually puzzled as to why the UFC would feature him in the main event. The only thing I can think of is that the UFC wanted to feature Jones without him facing a top 10 contender. In any case, the fight took place primary on the ground with Jones controlling the action. Then, with one swift strike Jones landed a crushing elbow that sent Vera into a frenzy to protect himself. After a few more quick blows, the ref had stopped the fight declaring Jones the victor. The light heavyweight division should take note, Jones is for real.
- Junior Dos Santos defeats Gabriel Gonzaga via KO - About what I expected, Santos landed a huge cross that absolutely floored Gonzaga. This fight definitely boosts Dos Santos into the lime light, I would think he is only one more victory away from a title shot.
- Cheick Kongo defeats Paul Buentello via tapout due to strikes- Another fight that almost ended early. Buentello dislocated apinkie finger early in the fight, but the doctor was able to put it back in place. Kongo dominated this fight taking Buentello down early and often. Buentello had to be surprised at Kongo's takedown game plan, but it worked to perfection. Eventually, Buentello taps due to the relentless strikes from Kongo. Good fight for Kongo, puts him back in good standing with the UFC. Also, the fight shows Kongo has been working at least some on his ground game.
- Alessio Sakara defeats James Irvin via TKO - This fight was a real disappointment as it ended early due to a strike to the eye of James Irvin. Sakara's left cross almost looked like a finger poke, but the slow motion replay showed the knuckle of Sakara hitting Irvin's eye. I think a rematch is in order.

Mini tornado rips through WA town
Updated July 28, 2011 20:39:27
The State Emergency Service is urging people to prepare their homes for more bad weather tonight.
A number of properties in the South West town of Waroona sustained serious damage when a brief but violent storm passed through the town last night.
A severe weather warning remains current from a line south west from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay.
SES spokesman Malcolm Piggot says with more bad weather on the way people need to prepare now.
"Tie down small garden sheds, tip trampolines upside down so the wind can't get under them and just generally clean up around the house bins; put them up so they can't blow away," he said.
Mr Piggott says he is amazed no one was injured in last night's storm.
"A lot of its luck and hopefully people are listening to our warnings about getting into safe positions in the houses and away from big plate glass windows," he said.

UFC 112 Invincible: Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie
UFC 112 will be the first event in Abu Dhabi and be the first event in an open air stadium. I find it interesting that they are holding an even "outdoors," but I don't see it having an effect on the fights.
I believe there are three interesting match ups on the card, with the first being the fight between Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie. To be honest, I don't know much about Renzo Gracie other than what I have read about him. I am a little surprised the UFC signed him to six fight contract, but he does bring the Gracie name back to the UFC.
As for Hughes, I have liked him ever since I started watching the UFC. He is aawesome fighter that dominated the middleweight weight class for almost five years. However, after loses in three of his last five fights, it appears that he is on the downside of his career. I should point out that two of those loses were against George St-Pierre, so one can argue that his best days may not yet be over.
So who wins this fight? At 43, Gracie is the older and slower of the two fighters. Look for Hughes to get a quick take down and use some good old ground and pound to finish this fight late in the first round or early in the second. I like Hughes by TKO.
