Police encourage people to leave

A group of people leave the Armadale court after a brawl erupted

A magistrate has been forced to flee her own court after a brawl erupted at the hearing of a man charged over a fatal hit and run in the Perth suburb of Gosnells.

A 39-year-old man Troy Darren Smith is facing a string of charges, including dangerous driving causing death.

A 55-year-old Gosnells grandfather Mr Mead, whose first name cannot be used for cultural reasons, was killed on Monday after being struck by a car allegedly driven by Mr Smith.

The Magistrate Elizabeth Langdon was forced to run from the Armadale courtroom after several relatives of the dead man lunged at the accused as a brawl erupted in court.

The court resumed the hearing after police reinforcements were called in.

Representing himself, Mr Smith told the court he had hit Mr Mead by accident.

Magistrate Langdon refused to grant bail and said she was concerned about his protection after witnessing the brawl earlier this morning.

Mr Smith has been remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance on June 21st.
