Nato raids 'killed 700 civilians'

RAF Typhoon aircraft at Gioia del Colle Air Base, ItalyNato says its air raids are to protect Libyan citizens

The Libyan government says Nato air raids have killed more than 700 civilians since bombing began in March.

Spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said more than 4,000 people had been wounded, but gave no evidence to confirm his figures.

Nato has denied killing large numbers of civilians, saying its air strikes are to protect Libyans from Colonel Gaddafi's forces.

Four powerful explosions were felt in the centre of Tripoli on Tuesday night, Libyan state media reported.

Planes were heard flying over the capital, but it was not possible to determine the targets of the raids.

'No exit strategy'

Speaking at a news conference in Tripoli, Mr Ibrahim accused Nato of killing and injuring hundreds of Libyan citizens.

"Since March 19, and up to May 26, there have been 718 martyrs among civilians and 4,067 wounded - 433 of them seriously," Mr Ibrahim said.

He said the figures did not include military casualties.

Foreign reporters in Tripoli have not been shown evidence of mass civilian casualties.

Asked why not, Mr Ibrahim said casualties had not been concentrated near the capital but scattered across the country.

He also denied that South African President Jacob Zuma, who met Col Gaddafi in Tripoli on Monday, had discussed an "exit strategy" with the Libyan leader.

"If Gaddafi goes, the security valve will disappear. His departure would be the worst case scenario for Libya," he told reporters.

Moussa IbrahimMoussa Ibrahim denied that Col Gaddafi had discussed a strategy for his departure

A statement released by Mr Zuma's office after he returned to Pretoria said Mr Gaddafi would not leave Libya, despite growing international pressure.

"Col Gaddafi called for an end to the bombings to enable a Libyan dialogue," the statement read.

"He emphasised that he was not prepared to leave his country, despite the difficulties."

After initially backing Nato's involvement, Mr Zuma and the African Union have called for a halt to air strikes, arguing that Nato has overstepped its UN mandate to protect civilians.

Both Libyan rebels and Nato have refused to accept a ceasefire until Col Gaddafi agrees to step down.

On Tuesday, Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said that Gaddafi's regime was "finished", during a visit to the rebel capital Benghazi, in eastern Libya.

"He [Gaddafi] must leave office, he must leave the country," Mr Frattini told a joint news conference with Ali al-Essawi, the rebels' foreign affairs chief.

"His aides have left, he has no international support, the G8 leaders reject him, he must go."

Government appoints ash scientist

Volcanic ash cloudAsh from Iceland's volcanoes has disrupted flights in the UK and Europe

The government has appointed its chief scientist to oversee the UK's reaction to any future volcanic ash clouds.

Professor Sir John Beddington is to head a peer review group that will analyse sources of data on ash concentrations.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said this would establish how best to update the model used by the Met Office to predict ash cloud movements.

The model's accuracy was criticised during an Icelandic eruption last week.

Thousands of passengers were affected by an ash cloud from the erupting Icelandic volcano Grimsvotn last week, with airlines such as Ryanair criticising the predictions and calling for less restrictions for aircraft travel during ash incidents.

During the eruption last week restrictions were placed on flights over Scotland as that was where authorities judged the highest density ash to be.

But Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said that a test flight in the area by his airline had not encountered any problems.

The volcano has now stopped erupting but there are warnings that Iceland is entering a new cycle of volcanic eruptions which may lead to far more disruption in the future.

Speaking at a European Civil Aviation Conference meeting in London, Mr Hammond said that more accurate data and better-informed decisions could only be reached by improving the input data for the model.

He added that airlines must constantly work with the government, regulators, air traffic controllers and the Met Office to improve the model's accuracy.

And the government wanted a broad international agreement on dealing with ash clouds, he said.

UFC 112 Invincible: Anderson Silva vs Demian Maia

UFC 112 will culminate with a fight between Anderson Silva and Demian Maia. This is a fight I thought should have happened back before Maia's loss to Nate Marquardt, but I think it actually makes more sense now.

The lessons Maia learned in the Marquardt fight will clearly help him. According to the UFC countdown show, Maia went from training muay thai one day a week to five days a week. I don't think this means he stands with Anderson Silva, but at least his reactions will be automatic instead of calculated.

Clearly Maia has to get this fight to the ground. The complicated part is that he has to be careful enough not to get knocked out without looking as though he is avoiding contact. We all remember what happened in the Thales Leites fight.

I would love to see this fight reach the ground, but I just can't picture how Maia gets this done. I think Anderson Silva wins this by knockout in the second round.

'Bigfoot' Inadvertently Caught in iPhone Video

A young woman in Spokane, Washington claims to have captured definitive video footage of the legendary Bigfoot, the elusive ape-like humanoid that famously avoids high definition footage.

The woman in question -- who revealed herself to the media only as "Samantha" -- says she was filming a group of friends hike through Downriver Park in Spokane when her iPhone inadvertently picked up the mythical beast.

Because the creature was some distance away, Samantha didn't notice until she reviewed the footage later at home. A few days later, she uploaded the video to YouTube; the "evidence" was soon viewed by over 700,000 believers and skeptics alike as of May 31 -- with a disproportionate number of "dislike" ratings.

Samantha seems convinced, however.

"I have never given it much thought, but now I'm not so sure," she explained to local news outlet KXLY."Seems real enough to me."

The current top comment on YouTube offers a more rational observation on why it may be fake.

"Any animal or even human that lives in these woods would not casually stroll by when 'intruders' are entering its territory," explained user OmicronTurtle. "It would be very aware of any hikers nearby. It would stay hidden, leave the area undetected, or attack."

In March, a Shelby, North Carolina, man claimed to have a video of the legendary Bigfoot as well.

Thomas Byers, who captured that grainy video, was convinced of his finding more by the smell than by what he saw.

"One thing I know is the smell of it was horrid. It smelled like a cross between road kill and a skunk," he said at the time.

Bigfoot, it seems, really likes to travel.

Man shot in hip in Melbourne

Posted June 1, 2011 00:24:00

A man is fighting for his life after being shot in the hip in Melbourne's west on Wednesday night

The man, aged in his mid-20s, was found lying in the street in Nicholson Street at Footscray shortly after 9:00pm (AEST).

Paramedic Andy McKenzie said the man "had lost a massive amount lot of blood".

"There was uncontrolled bleeding from the gun wound," he said.

The man was unconscious and paramedics carried out CPR as they rushed him to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"We put a drip in him and gave him some fluid and continued with the CPR," Mr McKenzie said.

"We were doing all this in a moving vehicle because our main concern was to just get him to a hospital in the shortest amount of time."

Two AmeriCorps Volunteers Reportedly Pulled From Jobs at Planned Parenthood

Federal officials responsible for the nation's volunteer service center reportedly yanked two participants working in a Planned Parenthood of New York City office after determining their activities violated program guidelines.

The two women had been working at the clinic for nine months before attracting attention from the Corporation for National and Community Service, which runs AmeriCorps, over activities they performed, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The roles of the women didn't raise red flags because of the abortion services Planned Parenthood provides, the newspaper reported, noting that AmeriCorps bans "providing abortion services or referrals for such services," but because the two may have violated rules on "attempting to influence legislation" and "organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes."

A spokeswoman for the Corporation for National and Community Service, Ranit Schmelzer, said federal officials informed state officials on May 18 "to take prompt action to prevent two New York City Civic Corps members from engaging in prohibited activities," according to the paper.

The New York Civic Corps agreed to use private money to cover the $1,270 monthly stipend and a $5,350 educational award given to the two women, officials told the newspaper. That is funding normally paid by AmeriCorps to the state, which then pays New York City's Civic Corps.

According to The Wall Street Journal, nationally, 13 workers, of the more than 80,000 AmeriCorps volunteers, work at Planned Parenthood organizations. The number is down to 11.

High-end homes lead price declines

By online business reporter Michael Janda

Updated May 31, 2011 15:12:00

Rooftops of houses in suburban Australia

Home prices have eased an average of 1.5 per cent over the past year in capital cities (User submitted: David Flannery, file photo)

The nation's most expensive suburbs have led a fall in home prices over the past month, quarter and year.

RP Data - Rismark's Hedonic Home Value Index shows home prices in the capital cities eased a further 0.3 per cent in April, 1.2 per cent over the April quarter, and 1.5 per cent over the past year, seasonally adjusted.

The median dwelling price in Australia's capital cities is now $468,000, with Sydney the highest at $515,000 and Hobart the lowest at $315,000.

House prices outside the capitals fell 0.6 per cent in April, 1.5 per cent over the April quarter, and 1.8 per cent over the year to April, with the median price at $325,000.

However, the steepest price falls generally occurred in the most expensive city suburbs.

Over the year to April, dwellings located in the most expensive 20 per cent of suburbs had an average fall of 5.4 per cent.

In contrast, properties in the lowest-priced 20 per cent of suburbs have performed best, with an annual fall of 0.5 per cent.

The 60 per cent of suburbs in between saw annual price declines of 0.9 per cent on average.

Rismark's joint managing director Christopher Joye says the top end of the property market is prone to bigger price swings in both directions.

"The uber-luxury segment is risky and highly illiquid and has had the rug whipped from under it via a combination of the soaring Aussie dollar and the enormous destruction of wealth in Australia's volatile share market," he noted in the report.

"A final fly in the ointment is the much lower growth - and pay packets - expected in the financial services industry going forward. Luxury homes in areas like Sydney's eastern suburbs will continue to face valuation headwinds as banks deal with the new normal of subdued credit growth."

Canberra had the best performance for home owners in the three months to April, with prices rising 0.8 per cent.

Prices eased over the April quarter in every other capital, with Darwin down 0.2 per cent, Sydney down 0.5 per cent and Melbourne down 0.8 per cent.

The steepest falls continued to be in Brisbane and Perth, which slumped 3.1 and 3 per cent respectively.

Adelaide prices slipped 2.3 per cent, and Hobart 2 per cent.

RP Data's research director Tim Lawless says Perth and Brisbane got very close to Sydney prices before the financial crisis, but have since pulled back dramatically.

"Brisbane's median house price is now 24 per cent lower than Sydney's and 14 per cent lower than Melbourne's. Pre-GFC the gap between Brisbane and Sydney dwelling prices was as narrow as 6.4 per cent," he explained in the report.

"Perth dwelling prices are now 18 per cent lower than Sydney's and 8 per cent lower than Melbourne's. At its narrowest, the gap between Perth and Sydney prices was just 2.3 per cent.

"The improved buying proposition in these cities should help support buyer sentiment, which has been very weak since the financial crisis."

The Ultimate Fighter 11: Episode 2

The second episode of the The Ultimate Fighter has already proved to me that this will be a great season. We have all the right elements in place.

First of all, the show has great coaches. Liddell is the strategist while Ortiz is the draw-you-in likable coach. Also, it doesn't hurt that these guys really hate each other. The strategy of Liddell is called into question early as Dana White tells both coaches he thinks Ortiz picked the better team. Liddell is quick to defend himself saying that he had done his research and you can't always judge a fighter by one fight. Time will tell on this one.

Second, the show has interesting fighters. The most interesting may just be Jamie Yager. To make it into the house, he threw consecutive head kicks and scored a knockout in under 30 seconds of the first round. Once in the house, Yager immediately joins up with theKris McCray and Brad Tavares and they decide to wake the entire house up using air-horns at 3:00am. I think it is easy to see there is going to be conflict in this season.

Finally, the show has some early story lines to follow. What will happen with the wildcards? Will the other fighters grow tired of Yager's mouth? Does something happen to Ortiz that forces him to leave the show? Who picked the better team? I guess we will have to stay tuned to find out.

OK, onto the fight. Liddell, having the luxury of picking the first fight, selects Kyle Noke from team Liddell to face Clay McKinney from team Ortiz. The choice proves to be a good one as Noke catches McKinney in a triangle forcing him to tap-out.

Team Liddell 1, Team Ortiz 0.

Inter salvages season with Cup win

Posted May 30, 2011 09:31:00

Inter Milan beat Palermo 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday to lift the Italian Cup and rescue an otherwise disappointing season.

It was Inter's fourth Cup success in the last seven years and Palermo's third defeat in as many trips to the Cup final.

Samuel Eto'o was the hero for Inter, scoring a brace and taking his season's tally for the club to 37 goals in all competitions, beating his previous best total at Barcelona by one goal.

"In football the important thing is to win and without the victory my record wouldn't have been as sweet," said the Cameroon captain.

For Inter boss Leonardo it was his first trophy as a coach.

"It's a huge satisfaction in an entertaining year, with many changes, for me and for Inter," said the Brazilian.

"Being able to finish the last game of the season with two trophies is fantastic," he added referring to the Club World Cup, won in December under his predecessor Rafael Benitez.

Ezequiel Munoz briefly gave Palermo hope late on, although he was subsequently sent off, before Diego Milito sealed the victory in injury time.

"We had a go but it wasn't enough, the more experienced side won," said Palermo coach Delio Rossi, who was also dismissed in the finale for venting his fury.

Palermo midfielder Giulio Migliaccio added: "We can hold our heads up, we played well but they have great players.

"But we brought 50,000 fans from Palermo and that's also a reason to be proud."

Cyber-attack hits Lockheed Martin

File picture of a US Lockheed Martin F-16 at an air display at the Farnborough International Air ShowLockheed Martin makes F-16 fighter jets

US defence firm Lockheed Martin says it has come under a significant cyber-attack, which took place last week.

Few details were available, but Lockheed said its security team had detected the threat quickly and ensured that none of its programmes had been compromised.

The Pentagon said it is working to establish the extent of the breach.

Lockheed makes fighter jets, warships and multi-billion dollar weapons systems sold worldwide.

Lt Col April Cunningham, speaking for the US defence department, said the impact on the Pentagon was "minimal and we don't expect any adverse effect".

Lockheed Martin said in a statement that it detected the attack on 21 May "almost immediately" and took counter-measures.

As a result, the company said, "our systems remain secure; no customer, program or employee personal data has been compromised".

However, it is still working to restore employee access several days after the attack.

Offshore attacks

Lockheed Martin is the world's biggest aerospace company and makes F-16, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets as well as warships.

Four years ago, the firm apparently tightened security after officials revealed hackers had breached Lockheed's high-tech Joint Fighter programme.

Josh Shaul, chief technology officer at New York-based database security company Application Security, said other defence contractors will now be assessing their own measures.

"I guarantee you every major defence contractor is on double alert this weekend, watching what's going on and making sure they're not the next to fall victim."

In Australia, too, the government has warned companies to be extra vigilant of offshore cyber attacks.

The advice comes after the outgoing head of the country's biggest oil and gas company said attacks were coming "from everywhere".

"It comes from eastern Europe; it comes from Russia. Just don't pick on the Chinese; it's everywhere," Don Voelte, chief executive of Woodside Petroleum was quoted as saying.

Australian Attorney-General Robert McClelland singled out resource companies as being targeted.

"There is no doubt that cyber-security threats are becoming worse," he told Reuters.

"Without talking about specific incidents, there have been a number of reports concerning our resource companies."

Bin Hammam quits FIFA election

Mohamed bin Hammam has pulled out of the race to oust FIFA president Sepp Blatter, just hours before facing the ethics committee of football's world governing body over bribery allegations.

Bin Hammam, 61, who launched his campaign on an anti-corruption platform and had waged a bitter war of words with the long-serving Blatter, said on his blog that he was withdrawing for the sake of FIFA's reputation.

"I made the decision to run for the FIFA presidency because I was and remain committed to change within FIFA," he said.

"However, recent events have left me hurt and disappointed - on a professional and personal level," bin Hammam, currently the head of the Asian Football Confederation, added.

"It saddens me that standing up for the causes that I believed in has come at a great price - the degradation of FIFA's reputation. This is not what I had in mind for FIFA and this is unacceptable."

"It is for this reason that I announce my withdrawal from the presidential election," he said.

The Qatari official added that he did not want his decision to be linked to the investigation by the FIFA ethics committee and vowed he would appear before the committee to clear his name of the "baseless allegations" against him.

Bin Hammam's statement was the latest dramatic twist in the battle for the top job in football, during which he himself made corruption allegations against his rival, 75-year-old Blatter.

The two men had been due to face off in a June 1 election for control of world football.

Bin Hammam and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, of Trinidad, are due to be questioned by FIFA's ethics committee later Sunday. Both deny any wrongdoing.

They and two Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials will be asked to answer allegations of bribery.

On Thursday, bin Hammam called for the investigation be widened to include Blatter. The committee also summoned the FIFA chief to ask him about claims he knew about the alleged cash bribes at the centre of the probe into bin Hammam.

In a brief statement issued Friday, Blatter said only: "I cannot comment on the proceedings that have been opened against me today. The facts will speak for themselves".

Bin Hammam and Warner were targeted after Chuck Blazer, general secretary of regional footballing body CONCACAF, reported possible misdeeds during a May 10 and 11 meeting in Trinidad.

British media reports said bin Hammam and Warner are accused of offering $40,000 cash gifts to national associations at the Trinidad conference in return for their votes in next week's presidential election.

During his campaign for the FIFA leadership, bin Hammam vowed to bring more transparency to the running of the organisation.

In his message posted early Sunday, he wrote: "I believe my candidacy has been a catalyst for debate within FIFA and has brought change to the top of the agenda".

UFC 111: John Fitch vs Ben Saunders

UFC 111 is this weekend, and there are a few fights I wanted to touch on. The first of which is the match up between John Fitch and Ben Saunders.

This fight was originally suppose to feature a rematch between Fitch and Thiago Alves, however Alves had to withdrawn from the fight when he couldn't get medical clearance to fight. Apparently, two MRI's and one cat scan identified an irregularity with his brain.

So with Alves out, Ben Saunders stepped in and suddenly finds himself with an opportunity. Think of it this way, he gets to fight on the best main card of the year, he will fight a top 3 contender in the welterweight division, and with a victory he would propel himself into serious title contention.

Although it sounds good, the down side is that Saunders has to face one tough dude. John Fitch is 11-1 in the UFC, with the lone loss coming against George St-Pierre. Stylistically, Saunders does well against fighters that will stand with him, that is one thing Fitch will not do.

The other factor here is how late Saunders took the fight, which could help or hurt him. I think Fitch wins this fight 90% of the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if Saunders wins the fight.

Policeman shot in face on Gold Coast

By Andree Withey and Russell Varley

Updated May 30, 2011 07:27:00

Police gather outside the Pacific Pines Tavern

Senior Constable Damian Leeding was responding to a triple-0 call at the Pacific Pines Tavern when he was shot. (ABC TV)

A police officer is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in the face during an armed hold-up on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Senior Constable Damian Leeding, 34, from Coomera was responding a triple-0 call at the Pacific Pines Tavern when he was shot in the face as he approached the tavern.

Queensland Police Union (QPU) president Ian Leavers says Senior Constable Leeding was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene just before 11pm (AEST).

"Damian and a female detective were responding to alleged armed robbery in progress and upon approaching the tavern the offender has come towards Damian and he has been shot in the head," he said.

It is understood three people armed with guns had been threatening staff and customers at the tavern.

Police say they believe up seven people had been involved in the hold-up.

Police detained two men as they tried to run into nearby parkland and they are being questioned about the incident.

One was bitten by a police dog.

Ambulance officers assessed the man but say he did not require hospital treatment.

Police have cordoned off the area and are searching for the remaining five suspects.

Mr Leavers says Senior Constable Leeding has undergone emergency surgery in the Gold Coast hospital and is in a critical condition.

He says he has been to the hospital and spoken with the female detective who was with Senior Constable Leeding at the time of the shooting.

"This is unfortunately the unpredictable nature of police work which can occur from time to time, but it is tragic and we are hoping for a good outcome," he said.

Mr Leavers says Senior Constable Leeding is a well respected officer with Coomera CIB.

"Damian is a married man - his wife is also a police officer and he has two very young children," he said.

"It is a very distressing time and our prayers and thoughts are with them.

"I have spoken to the colleagues and police on the scene and all are hoping for the best possible outcome and our prayers and thoughts are with Damian and his family."

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said at a press conference "the worst situation almost that you could possibly imagine for us has occurred".

Commissioner Atkinson says officers at Coomera CIB will be given extra support.

"It's our intention to bring in extra police from outside to help in the staffing of Coomera for the next 48 hours so that the officers at least have additional back-up there," Commissioner Atkinson said.

"If they choose to take some time off and then we can support them in that regard."

Commissioner Atkinson says he believes the incident will touch the wider community.

"I think there will be an outpouring of support for people who in the daily course of their duties put their own safety at risk to protect the public," he said.

Police want to hear from anyone with information about the incident.

Obama to tour tornado-hit Joplin

Emergency services and volunteers are still searching for survivors

US President Barack Obama is set to visit the tornado-hit city of Joplin in Missouri, where 142 people are now known to have been killed.

Mr Obama will meet survivors and see the damage for himself.

He will also take part in a memorial service and observe a minute of silence at 1741 local time (2141 GMT) - exactly a week after the tornado struck.

On Saturday, a list of 156 people missing dropped to 105 after more were accounted for, city officials said.

The tornado, with winds of 200mph (322km/h), was one of the most destructive in US history. It injured more than 900 people and carved a swathe of destruction through the city.

Honouring victims

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared Sunday an official State Day of Prayer and Remembrance.

"I invite all Missourians to pause and remember their neighbours and draw upon the resources of their faith in support of their fellow Missourians," the governor said in a statement.

US and Missouri flags will fly at half-mast over all government buildings in the state throughout the day.

A rescuer with a dog searches through the rubble in JoplinThe tornado destroyed about a third of Joplin

President Obama will attend a community memorial service at the Taylor Performing Arts Center on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

During the service, the whole city is expected to fall silent for a minute to honour the victims of the single tornado that devastated Joplin.

On Saturday, city manager Mark Rohr said Mr Obama's visit would be an opportunity to convey the scope of the damage to the federal government.

Mr Rohr also said the death toll now stood at 142 - an increase of three from the previous total.

Among the newly confirmed victims was teenager Will Norton, who was sucked from his father's car as they drove home from his high school graduation.

More than 600 volunteers and 50 dog teams are still scouring the shattered remains of homes and offices for survivors or victims.

"We're going to be in a search and rescue mode until we remove the last piece of debris," Mr Rohr said.

Joplin police say they have made 17 arrests for looting.

Funerals

The US National Weather Service says that 2011 is already the deadliest year for tornadoes since 1950, when precise figures were first kept.

The death toll so far this year stands at 520. The previous highest recorded death toll in a single year was 519 in 1953.

The first funeral of a confirmed victim from the Joplin tornado was held on Friday.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at a church in Galena, just over the Kansas border, for the funeral of Adam Dewayne Darnaby, 27.

So far at least 19 bodies have been released to families, but many are yet to be formally identified.

Officials say that, wherever possible, they prefer to base identifications on DNA, medical records and also distinguishing features such as tattoos and piercings.

However, some families of victims say the delays are adding to their distress.

UFC 111: Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin

I am not exactly sure how to bestsummarizemy thoughts on this fight, so let's just jump into it. Since his loss to Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir has been on a mission. He started a weight lifting program and if I remember right he put on about 20-30 pounds of muscle. The new found motivation for training has alsoprompted him to say stupid things like he wanted Brock Lesnar to die in the Octagon. My point is this, the guy is obviously motivated and that is a dangerous thing.

Speaking of dangerous things, Shane Carwin is ananomalyin the UFCheavyweightdivision. Let me lay the stats down for you, the guy has a perfect record (11-0) with four of those victories coming in the UFC. OK, that is pretty good but add the fact that no fighter has made it past the first round and you start to understand how good this guy is.

What makes Carwin so dangerous is that he is an elite wrestler with the punching power to put anybody to sleep. Mir has good hands, but Carwin has already shown that he has a good chin. I say advantage Carwin.

The key for Mir will be to extend the length of the fight, the longer it goes the better for Mir.The odds makers have Mir as their favorite, but I like Carwin in this fight. Expect some heavy hands to end this fight early.

Italian Seismologists Charged With Manslaughter for Not Predicting 2009 Quake

Italian government officials have accused the country's top seismologist of manslaughter, after failing to predict a natural disaster that struck Italy in 2009, a massive devastating earthquake that killed 308 people.

A shocked spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) likened the accusations to a witch hunt.

"It has a medieval flavor to it -- like witches are being put on trial," the stunned spokesman told FoxNews.com.

Enzo Boschi, the president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will face trial along with six other scientists and technicians, after failing to predict the future and the impending disaster.

Earthquakes are, of course, nearly impossible to predict, seismologists say. In fact, according to the website for the USGS, no major quake has ever been predicted successfully.

"Neither the USGS nor Caltech nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake," reads a statement posted on the USGS website. "They do not know how, and they do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future."

John Vidale, a Washington State seismologist and professor at the University of Washington, agreed that earthquake forecasting is simply impossible.

"We're not able to predict earthquakes very well at all," he told LiveScience.

"One problem is, we don't know how much stress it takes to break a fault," Vidale told the site. "Second we still don't know how much stress is down there. All we can do is measure how the ground is deforming."

Not knowing either of these factors makes it pretty tough to figure out when stresses will get to the point of a rupture, and an earth-shaking quake, LiveScience explained.

The seven scientists were placed under investigation almost a year ago, according to a news story on the website of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) -- the world's largest general-science society and a leading voice for the interests of scientists worldwide.

Alan Leschner, chief executive of AAAS, said his group wrote a letter to the Italian government last year -- clearly, to no avail.

"Whoever made these accusations misunderstands the nature of science, the nature of the discipline and how difficult it is to predict anything with the surety they expect," Leschner told FoxNews.com.

The case could have a "chilling effect" on scientists, he noted.

"It reflects a lack of understanding about what science can and can't do," he said. "And frankly, it will have an effect of intimidating scientists ... This just feels like either scapegoating or an attempt to intimidate a community. This really seems inappropriate."

Judge Giuseppe Romano Gargarella said that the seven defendants had supplied "imprecise, incomplete and contradictory information," in a press conference following a meeting held by the committee 6 days before the quake, reported the Italian daily Corriere della Sera

In doing so, they "thwarted the activities designed to protect the public," the judge said.

Boschi's lawyer, Marcello Melandri, has been taking the news badly, reported the AAAS story. He was particularly stunned because -- despite of the near impossibility of predicting earthquakes Boshi had been indicating that a large earthquake would be coming, though he did not say when.

Melandri told the AAAS that Boschi never sought to reassure the population of L'Aquila that there was no threat. On the contrary, the INGV head made it clear that "at some point it is probable that there will be a big earthquake."

In addition to Boschi, those facing trial are:

* Franco Barberi, committee vice president;
* Bernardo De Bernardinis, at the time vice president of Italy's Civil Protection Department and now president of the country's Institute for Environmental Protection and Research;
* Giulio Selvaggi, director of the National Earthquake Center;
* Gian Michele Calvi, director of the European Center for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering;
* Claudio Eva, an earth scientist at the University of Genoa; and
* Mauro Dolce, director of the office of seismic risk at the Civil Protection Department.
