Staff at Parliament House are planning to walk off the job for four hours this morning in protest at what their union says is a lack of progress in pay negotiations.
The Commonwealth and Public Sector Union says the walk-out will affect visitor guides, Hansard and broadcasting services.
They will rally outside the entrance to Parliament and then march down Federation Mall to protest against the Government's latest offer on pay and conditions.
The union says the pay offer put to parliamentary staff is lower than inflation.
Department of Parliamentary Services secretary Alan Thompson says the action is inconvenient.
"I don't think we welcome them at all. They're part of the normal process of negotiating a new industrial agreement," he said.
"We would strongly prefer that this industrial action had not occurred but nevertheless it is part of the negotiating process."
Non-union workers will be brought in to ensure Parliamentary proceedings are recorded, but there may be delays in the production of Hansard.
Mr Thompson says contingency plans are in place to ensure industrial action does not stop the official broadcast of today's sitting of Federal Parliament.
"We think it's very important. It's one of the last days, in fact it is the last day of this parliamentary sitting and we want to provide the best service we can," he said.
"It is possible that some of the advice we provide to parliamentarians out of our library will be delayed. But ... that's less important than ensuring that there is a good record of the proceedings of the chambers."
